German Plural Processing: New Evidence from ERP- and Reaction Time Experiments
نویسندگان
چکیده
The processing of the German plural has been examined in a range of behavioral and neurophysiological studies. A number of studies so far showed differences between the processing of the default plural form -s and the irregular plural form -(e)n. While previous studies focused on the examination of generally two plural categories (e.g. -(e)n versus -s), the current study aimed at examining four German plural categories with different morpheme endings and violating them cross-wise. The results of the current auditory event-related (ERP) and reaction time study show general similarities between the more acoustically salient plural categories. In the early latency range from 200 400 ms -n violated by -s plural (and the cross-condition) act differently from the -e versus -er plural violations (and the cross-conditions) but in the later time windows only violation effects are visible. Processing differences may be explained by the morphological characteristics of the plural categories and/or phonetic differences between the suffixes.

Second language learners’ processing of inflected words: Behavioral and ERP evidence for storage and decomposition
This study reports the results of two behavioral and two event-related brain potential (ERP) experiments examining the processing of inflected words in advanced second language (L2) learners with Russian as their native language (L1) who learnt German as an L2 after childhood. Two different subsystems of German inflection were studied, participial inflection and noun plurals. For participial fo...
متن کاملBrain potentials to morphologically complex words during listening.
This study uses event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to investigate the processing of morphologically regular and irregular words during auditory comprehension. ERPs were recorded, while 23 German-speaking subjects listened to correctly and incorrectly inflected noun plural forms presented in sentential contexts. ERP responses to violations of morphological structure were different to those of...

متن کاملNaomi Feldman Learning and Overgeneralization Patterns in a Connectionist Model of the German Plural
The debate over the processing mechanism for inflectional morphology has focused largely on the German plural system because it seems to contain a minority default, a form that has low frequency but high productivity in diverse contexts. Child overgeneralization patterns, phonological similarity effects, restrictions on compounding, reaction times, and neural dissociations have all been used to...
متن کاملThe Case of the German Plural: Can Too Many Rules Mean No Rule-governed System at All?
Previous research on the acquisition of morphological markers has focused on whether they are learned via rule induction (Marcus et al., 1992) or through an instancebased manner (Marchman, Plunkett & Goodman, 1997). To provide evidence on this debate, this paper focuses on the German plural as it is a case where there are many morphological markers used to mark the same inflectional class. Two ...
